Ranch first opened its doors in 1980 under the direction of Gene’s oldest son Bruce Johnston, the eldest son of 12 children. The first year began with our Second Wind leadership program for high school students. Over time, educators, pastors, and parents from across the country have recognized Second Wind as one of the finest youth leadership programs in America. Its success was the catalyst for the expanded family programs currently offered at JH Ranch. Gene’s vision to create something of eternal value has become a reality, as the JH Ranch transforms families and impacts future generations.
As a young man in his twenties, Gene Johnston made a promise to the Lord, “If you will bless me financially, I will do something of eternal value with those resources.” Thirty years later in 1979, Gene stumbled upon a now 1200-acre guest ranch in the beautiful mountains of Northern California. He purchased the property with the vision of fulfilling his promise to the Lord.
Bruce Johnston is the founder and president of JH Ranch and has grown and expanded the Ranch ministries to include Scott River Lodge, JH Outback, JH Outback International. Bruce has been involved in student leadership development and family ministry for over 40 years.
Heather Johnston is the Founder and Executive Director of both JH Israel and U.S. Israel Education Association. Heather Johnston’s more than 20-year involvement with the nation of Israel has afforded her a unique position to work dynamically inside of the United States-Israel relationship as an educator and thought leader. Heather is also the author and content developer of Uncommon Favor, a book about the intentional life of becoming a disciple.
Bruce and Heather operate our Legacy Properties in Northern California during the summer months and reside in Birmingham, Alabama, where our national and international offices are located.
They have two children, a son-in-law, and three grandchildren.
JH RANCH offers programs for individuals, couples, and families in every phase of life. We help you discover your life purpose, strengthen your relationships with God and family, and develop your personal values. The program content is both taught and experienced through the varied adventures and activities that the Ranch has to offer. With each challenge, our goal is to not only teach but also model what it means to grow with greater love for God and others, beginning in the family.
JH OUTBACK is a catalyst for transformation in communities across the country and around the world. Our weekend events are a life-changing experience for everyone who attends them, where people can focus on strengthening their relationship with family, friends, and God.
SCOTT RIVER LODGE was purchased in 2006 to expand the Husband and Wife program that was held at JH Ranch at the time. The Lodge is a premier, all-inclusive retreat for married couples to escape the hectic pace of life and enjoy rest, relaxation, romance, and renewal.
